How to Get Your Dog Ready for Your New Baby

Hey mama, congratulations on your growing family! Bringing a baby into the world is such an exciting time, but it also comes with its challenges—especially when you have a fur baby at home. I know how important it is to create a harmonious environment for both your baby and your pup. Today, I'm sharing some important tips on preparing your dog for your baby’s arrival. Trust me, it’s worth the effort!

The Science Behind Desensitization

Desensitization is a process based on the principles of classical conditioning, where a dog learns to associate a new stimulus with a positive outcome. This technique helps in reducing fear and anxiety by gradually exposing the dog to the stimulus in a controlled manner, paired with positive reinforcement like treats and praise.

Is This Really Necessary?

Dogs thrive on routine and familiarity, and a new baby can bring about a lot of changes. Preparing your dog for these changes helps reduce their anxiety and ensures a smoother transition for everyone. A calm, well-adjusted dog is less likely to exhibit stress-related behaviors like barking, chewing, or even aggression.

How It Works

When we talk about desensitization, we're essentially reprogramming your dog’s response to something new and potentially scary. By introducing the stimulus (in this case, baby-related sounds or items) at a low intensity and pairing it with positive experiences, your dog learns that these new additions are nothing to fear. Over time, and with consistent practice, your dog’s comfort level increases, making the transition smoother when your baby finally arrives.

Our Personal Experience

Let me share a little anecdote from my own life. My husband and I sleep with thunderstorms playing on our Amazon Alexa in the background, and our dogs sleep in our room. Because of this, thunderstorms have never bothered them. They associate the sounds of a thunderstorm with the safety and tranquility of bedtime. Makes sense, right? This same principle can be applied when preparing your dog for the sounds and activities that come with a new baby!

EXAMPLE: Desensitizing to Crying Baby Sounds

One of the first things you can start with is desensitizing your dog to the sound of a crying baby. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Start with an audio recording of a crying baby. (I made one just for you, below!) Play it at a very low volume initially.
  • While the sound is playing, give your dog lots of praise, treats, or engage them with their favorite enrichment toy.
  • Keep these sessions short—just a few minutes.
  • Gradually increase the volume of the crying baby sound over several days or weeks, continuing to pair it with positive reinforcement.
  • By doing this, your dog will start to associate the sound of a crying baby with good things, reducing any anxiety they might feel when they hear the real thing.

Using Desensitization for Other Baby-Related Stimuli

This same desensitization technique can be applied across the board for all things baby-related. Consistency and patience are key!

Top 5 Things to Desensitize Your Dog To

Here’s a helpful list of baby-related items and sounds to start desensitizing your dog to before your baby arrives:

1. Sound Machines

These are often used to soothe babies to sleep, and the various sounds can be unfamiliar to your dog.

2. Strollers

Practice walking around the neighborhood with your dog and the empty stroller so your dog gets used to its presence and movement.

3. Breast Pumps

The sound can be so novel and startling. It's use is also sometimes associated with discomfort or stress from mom, so let your dog hear it in short bursts while giving treats.

4. Motorized Swings or Bassinets

The movement and noise can be surprising, so introduce these gradually. Use a leash at first to prevent any damage to this expensive gadget.

5. Visitors

Babies often bring a lot of new people to the house. Help your dog get used to more foot traffic by inviting friends over more frequently.
